In a significant political development ahead of the upcoming municipal elections, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have formally announced an alliance in Maharashtra. The decision was made public in Mumbai on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, with MNS chief Raj Thackeray sharing the stage with his cousin, former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Raj Thackeray clarified that the alliance has been finalised specifically for the Mumbai civic elections scheduled for January 15. He also indicated that a similar understanding could soon be extended to Nashik. Raj added that discussions are underway with the Sharad Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party, though no formal details have been finalised so far. Importantly, the two parties did not disclose any seat-sharing arrangement for the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

Addressing party workers, Raj Thackeray asserted that the next Mayor of Mumbai would be a Marathi individual and would come from either Shiv Sena (UBT) or the MNS, underlining their shared regional identity and political vision.

Uddhav Thackeray, speaking at the event, said the alliance was not merely an electoral arrangement but a commitment to long-term unity. He delivered a strong message, stating that the coalition aims to protect Mumbai from forces seeking to undermine local interests. Appealing directly to the Marathi community, he warned that division at this stage could lead to political defeat.

Uddhav Thackeray also extended an open invitation to those disillusioned with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s current political approach, suggesting they could find a platform within this new alliance.

Reacting to the announcement, senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut described the day as a historic moment for Maharashtra politics. He said the alliance reaffirmed the leadership of the Thackeray family and positioned them as a central force capable of guiding the State’s future.

Discussions between Shiv Sena (UBT) and the MNS regarding the BMC elections had been ongoing for several months. With this official announcement, the alliance is being seen as a potential game-changer in Mumbai’s political landscape ahead of the high-stakes civic polls.
