At least one person was killed, and 23 others were injured after Russia launched overnight missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials said early Saturday (January 24, 2026).

Air raid sirens were sounded across the country as Ukrainian military authorities warned of incoming drones and possible ballistic missile strikes targeting Kyiv. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the capital came under what he described as a “large-scale enemy attack,” urging residents to remain inside bomb shelters.

According to the mayor, several non-residential buildings in Kyiv were damaged during the strikes. One fatality has been confirmed in the city, while four people were injured, three of whom were taken to the hospital for treatment. Fires broke out in multiple locations after drone debris fell on buildings, and disruptions were reported in water supply and heating services in parts of the capital.

The impact of the attacks was also felt in areas surrounding Kyiv. The head of the regional military administration said four additional people were wounded in the wider Kyiv region.

In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city near the Russian border, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that Iranian-made Shahed drones were used in the assault. Several residential buildings were damaged as a result of the strikes. Ukrainian police said 15 people were injured in the Kharkiv region, and two medical facilities sustained damage.

The latest attacks came just a day after representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States held direct talks in Abu Dhabi, the first such meeting aimed at ending the nearly four-year-long conflict. The negotiations are being facilitated as part of an initiative backed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Ahead of the talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that territorial issues remain the central obstacle to any peace agreement. Moscow continues to demand that Ukrainian forces withdraw from the eastern Donbas region, a condition Kyiv has firmly rejected.

Despite renewed diplomatic engagement, the situation on the ground remains tense, with ongoing military action dimming hopes for an immediate end to the war.
