Notice Seeking Removal of Lok Sabha Speaker to Be Taken Up in Second Phase of Budget Session

The notice submitted by Opposition Members of Parliament seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will be listed during the second phase of the ongoing Budget Session. According to reports, certain errors have been identified in the document, and the process will proceed only after the corrections are made.

On Tuesday (February 10, 2026), Opposition MPs formally handed over the notice to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha. In their submission, they alleged that the Speaker had conducted House proceedings in a “partisan manner” and called for his removal from office.

Sources indicate that the notice referred to four incidents that occurred in February; however, the year was mistakenly mentioned as 2025 instead of 2026. This discrepancy has been treated as a technical flaw that needs rectification before further action can be initiated.

It is understood that the Speaker has directed the Secretariat to address the shortcomings in the notice and proceed according to established parliamentary rules once a revised version is received. The corrected notice will then be examined promptly in line with procedural requirements.

Sources also suggest that, on moral grounds, Mr Birla will refrain from presiding over House proceedings until the motion seeking his removal is resolved.

The first phase of the Budget Session commenced on January 28 and will continue until February 13. Following a recess, the second phase is scheduled to take place from March 9 to April 2.

Attention is now focused on when the amended notice will be resubmitted and how the matter will unfold in Parliament during the upcoming phase of the session.
