Japanese automotive giant Nissan has announced a groundbreaking partnership with UK-based AI startup Wayve to integrate the company’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems into its vehicles. This deal marks Wayve’s first large-scale supply of autonomous driving technology to an automaker, positioning it as a significant player in the self-driving technology sector.

In a joint statement released Wednesday, both companies confirmed that the partnership would accelerate the development of autonomous systems under real-world conditions, although fully driverless vehicles are still some years away. What sets Wayve apart from other autonomous driving companies is its reliance on real-time AI-powered navigation rather than pre-programmed maps, offering a dynamic, adaptable approach to self-driving.

Wayve, which raised over $1 billion last year, will begin testing its AI systems in Nissan vehicles. The collaboration will integrate Wayve’s AI technology into Nissan’s “ProPILOT” advanced driver-assistance system. The companies revealed that Nissan unveiled a prototype vehicle in September, combining Wayve’s AI software with the automaker’s cutting-edge laser sensors to enhance vehicle autonomy.

Alex Kendall, CEO of Wayve, stated, “Nissan operates in most markets worldwide, and our goal is to create autonomy that works on a global scale. We’re providing the AI software, which allows Nissan to integrate the system with their vehicles and hardware in a way that makes sense for their business model.”

Wayve has already begun training its data models in locations like London and Tokyo under human supervision, and both companies plan to introduce the new generation of ProPILOT, featuring Wayve’s AI, in Japan by fiscal year 2027. The technology will then be rolled out to North America, marking a significant expansion in the use of autonomous driving systems.

This partnership is seen as a pivotal move for Nissan, which has faced intense competition and economic pressures in recent years, exacerbated by the fallout from the arrest and subsequent escape of former CEO Carlos Ghosn. Despite these challenges, the company is actively pushing for recovery by focusing on innovation, and this collaboration with Wayve is a clear step toward technological rejuvenation.

While Wayve’s collaboration with Nissan is its most prominent deal, the startup is not limiting its partnerships to just one automaker. In London, Wayve is working with ride-hailing giant Uber to develop and eventually test fully autonomous robotaxi services on public roads.
