Iran has delivered a strong warning to the United States, stating that any military strike against its territory would trigger a defensive response in which American bases and military assets across the Middle East would be considered “legitimate targets.”
The warning was conveyed by Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, in a formal letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council.
The development comes amid heightened tensions following recent military deployments ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump. The U.S. has reportedly positioned warships, fighter jets, and additional military hardware in the Middle East. Washington maintains that the move is aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Tehran, however, has consistently denied pursuing a nuclear bomb, insisting that its nuclear program is strictly for peaceful and civilian purposes.
In his letter, Iravani referenced a recent social media statement by President Trump, in which he suggested that if Iran fails to reach an agreement, the United States could utilise British military facilities, including a base located on an island in the Indian Ocean, for potential operations.
Iran described the U.S. President’s remarks as provocative and warned that such rhetoric poses a serious threat to regional stability and international peace. Tehran urged the UN Security Council to take action and ensure that what it called “unlawful threats of force” are immediately halted.

At the same time, Iran reaffirmed its commitment to diplomacy, stating it remains open to resolving concerns about its peaceful nuclear activities through mutual respect and reciprocal engagement.
On Thursday, President Trump indicated that Iran has a maximum of 15 days to reach a deal, reiterating that military action remains an option if negotiations collapse.
Earlier this month, on February 10, indirect discussions took place in Geneva involving U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and the President’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, who engaged through intermediaries with Iran’s top diplomat. Sources familiar with the talks suggested that some progress had been made.
Tensions between the two nations had previously surged after Israel launched surprise strikes against Iran in June last year, sparking a 12-day conflict. During that period, the United States briefly joined military operations targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, derailing earlier diplomatic efforts.
With strong rhetoric and military posturing on both sides, the international community is closely watching whether renewed diplomatic engagement can prevent another confrontation or whether the region is heading toward further instability.
