Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) announced the signing of a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, describing it as a historic step for the global economy. He stated that the agreement encompasses nearly 25% of the world’s GDP and accounts for approximately one-third of international trade.

Addressing the Indian Energy Week through a virtual platform, the Prime Minister congratulated all stakeholders involved in finalising the India-EU trade pact. Referring to it as the “mother of all deals,” PM Modi said the agreement is expected to unlock vast opportunities for 1.4 billion Indians as well as millions of people across Europe. He informed that the agreement was formally concluded on Monday.

According to the Prime Minister, the deal reflects strong coordination and cooperation between two of the world’s major economic blocs. He noted that the agreement would not only enhance global trade flows but also help strengthen international supply chains.

PM Modi further stated that the India-EU FTA would complement existing trade agreements with the United Kingdom and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), thereby expanding India’s footprint in global commerce.

Congratulating young professionals and workers associated with sectors such as textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, and footwear, the Prime Minister said the agreement would be especially beneficial for these industries. He emphasised that the deal would boost manufacturing activity in India while also accelerating growth in the services sector.

“This free trade agreement will further strengthen global confidence in India among businesses and investors,” PM Modi said, adding that India continues to actively build strong global partnerships across all sectors.

Experts believe that the India-EU Free Trade Agreement could provide a significant push to investment, job creation, and exports in the coming years, reinforcing India’s economic position on the global stage.
