ICC Takes Action Over Fourth Ashes Test Pitch, MCG Handed One Demerit Point

By: The Trek News Desk

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has rated the pitch used for the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as “unsatisfactory” and has imposed one demerit point on the venue. The decision follows an assessment by match referee Jeff Crowe, who concluded that the surface offered excessive assistance to bowlers.

The concerns arose after an unusually fast-paced Test match that ended in two days. A total of 20 wickets fell on the opening day, with bowlers continuing to dominate on the second day as well. England went on to win the match by four wickets, with no batter from either side managing to score a half-century during the game.

In an official statement, the ICC said the pitch failed to meet the standards outlined in its Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, leading to the penalty for the MCG. As per ICC regulations, a venue that accumulates six demerit points can face a suspension from hosting international matches for a period of 12 months.

Explaining the decision, Jeff Crowe said the imbalance between bat and ball was evident throughout the match. He pointed out that 20 wickets fell on the first day and 16 on the second, with batting proving extremely difficult under the conditions, making the pitch unacceptable under ICC guidelines.

The pitch came under heavy criticism from various quarters. England captain Ben Stokes remarked that such conditions were not ideal for the game, while Cricket Australia reportedly described the surface as damaging from a commercial perspective.

Across just 142 overs, spectators witnessed 36 wickets fall, highlighting the unusually bowler-friendly nature of the match. Despite England recording their first Test victory in Australia since 2011, the result had no impact on the overall series outcome. Australia had already secured the Ashes by winning the first three Tests, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead.

The fifth and final Test of the Ashes series is scheduled to begin in Sydney on January 4.
