Marking a significant shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape, Tarique Rahman took oath as the Prime Minister on Tuesday, February 17. Earlier in the day, Rahman and all newly elected Members of Parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were sworn in at the National Parliament building in Dhaka.
The swearing-in follows the 13th Parliamentary Elections held on February 12, in which the BNP secured a commanding majority. Political observers describe the results as a defining moment that could reshape the country’s governance and policy direction.
The oath-taking ceremony, held at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad complex, symbolised not only a transfer of power but also the end of nearly two decades of political exile for the BNP. It also formally concluded the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Rahman becomes Bangladesh’s first male Prime Minister in more than 30 years. His leadership begins at a time when the nation is still navigating the aftermath of the 2024 student-led movement that significantly altered the political climate.
The new Prime Minister faces the critical task of stabilising the country and responding to calls for sweeping reforms, particularly from younger voters who played a decisive role in the recent elections. Economic restructuring, institutional reforms, and restoring public trust are expected to be among the government’s immediate priorities.
Unlike previous swearing-in events typically held in more restricted settings, this ceremony took place at the Parliament complex’s South Plaza to accommodate around 1,200 guests. The large-scale arrangement reflected both the political significance of the moment and the party’s return to power.
Analysts believe this leadership transition represents an important chapter in Bangladesh’s democratic journey. Attention now turns to how the new administration will steer the country toward political stability, economic progress, and social cohesion in the months ahead.
