Hard-Right Leader Jose Antonio Kast Set to Become Chile’s Next President

By: The Trek News Desk

Chile has elected hard-right politician Jose Antonio Kast as its next president following a decisive win in the presidential runoff election. Official results show Kast securing around 58 per cent of the vote, comfortably defeating the left-wing candidate Jeannette Jara, who received nearly 42 per cent. Conceding defeat, Jara congratulated Kast and wished him success in governing the country.

With more than 95 per cent of ballots counted from Sunday’s vote, Kast’s lead was declared irreversible. Political observers say the outcome represents Chile’s strongest shift toward right-wing leadership in the past 35 years, marking a major change in the country’s political direction.

Throughout his campaign, Kast focused heavily on public concerns over rising crime, illegal immigration, and border security. His proposals included constructing border barriers, deploying the military to crime-hit areas, and expelling undocumented migrants, policies that resonated with voters increasingly anxious about safety and social stability.

This election marked Kast’s third attempt at the presidency and his second appearance in a runoff. He previously lost the 2021 election to leftist President Gabriel Boric. While once viewed by many Chileans as too extreme, growing frustration over crime and migration in recent years helped broaden his support base.

Celebrations erupted outside Kast’s campaign headquarters in Santiago on Sunday night, where supporters waved Chilean flags and gathered in large numbers. Some were seen wearing red caps bearing the slogan “Make Chile Great Again,” reflecting the strong enthusiasm among his backers.

Despite his electoral success, Kast is expected to face significant challenges in Congress. Following November’s legislative elections, Chile’s parliament remains deeply divided. The Senate is evenly split between left- and right-leaning parties, while the balance of power in the lower house rests with the populist People’s Party. As a result, several of Kast’s tougher policy proposals may encounter resistance.

Chile is the world’s largest producer of copper and a major supplier of lithium. Expectations of reduced regulation and pro-market reforms under Kast have already boosted investor confidence, lifting the local stock market, the peso, and key equity indices.

Kast has also been outspoken in his opposition to abortion and emergency contraceptive measures. However, any attempt to change existing laws would require majority approval in Congress, making legislative reform uncertain. Analysts say Kast’s victory not only reshapes Chile’s political landscape but also signals the continued rise of right-wing movements across Latin America.
