A tragic incident was reported in Assam’s Hojai district early Saturday morning when the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express collided with a herd of elephants, resulting in the death of eight elephants, while one was left injured, forest department officials confirmed.
The accident occurred around 2:17 am in the Changjurai area, as the elephants were reportedly crossing the railway tracks. The high-speed impact caused the locomotive and five coaches of the train to derail.
Despite the severity of the collision, no passengers were injured, according to a spokesperson from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). Railway authorities stated that emergency response teams were deployed immediately, and safety measures were put in place to manage the situation.
Nagaon Divisional Forest Officer Suhash Kadam said he, along with other forest officials, reached the accident site shortly after the incident. Efforts are underway to provide medical care to the injured elephant and to assess the impact on the surrounding wildlife.
Rail movement on the Jamunamukh-Kampur section has been disrupted due to the derailment. Trains passing through the affected stretch are being diverted via the up line, while restoration and track clearance work continue at a fast pace.
The Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express operates between Sairang in Mizoram (near Aizawl) and Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi. The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over wildlife safety near railway corridors, particularly in forested regions of the Northeast.
