At least 13 passengers lost their lives, and close to 100 others were injured after a passenger train derailed in Mexico’s south-western state of Oaxaca, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The Mexican Navy, which oversees the country’s railway operations, said several of the injured remain in critical condition.

According to official information, the train was travelling from the Gulf of Mexico toward the Pacific coast and was carrying 241 passengers along with nine crew members at the time of the accident. A total of 98 people sustained injuries, with 36 of them currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Officials said the derailment occurred near a sharp curve close to the town of Nizanda. The Office of Mexico’s Attorney General has launched a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed concern over the incident, stating that five of the injured passengers are in serious condition. She added that senior government officials, including the Secretary of the Navy, have been dispatched to the crash site to oversee rescue and relief operations.

Images from the scene showed train coaches thrown off the tracks and partially tilted near a cliff, as emergency teams worked to evacuate passengers and provide medical assistance.

The Navy reported that the Interoceanic train involved in the crash consisted of two locomotives and four passenger cars. This rail service connects the Pacific port of Salina Cruz with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast and forms a key part of Mexico’s strategic rail network.

Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara Cruz conveyed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, saying state authorities are coordinating closely with federal agencies to support victims and their families.

The Interoceanic railway project was inaugurated two years ago to boost economic growth in southern Mexico. Launched under the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the initiative aims to modernise transportation across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and transform the region into a major trade corridor through the expansion of ports, railways, and industrial infrastructure.

The train service is considered a cornerstone of the government’s broader plan to enhance passenger and freight connectivity in southern Mexico while driving long-term regional development.
