Cambridge Dictionary’s 2025 Word of the Year: ‘Parasocial’, the Rise of One-Sided Digital Bonds

By: The Trek News Desk

Ever felt emotionally connected to a celebrity you’ve never met? Cambridge Dictionary has selected “Parasocial” as its Word of the Year 2025, spotlighting a rapidly growing trend of one-sided and often unhealthy emotional attachments shaped by today’s hyper-digital culture.

What Does ‘Parasocial’ Mean?

A Parasocial Relationship (PSR) describes a bond where someone feels a deep, personal connection with a celebrity, influencer, fictional character, or even an AI chatbot, despite having no real-world interaction with them.
This is only the second time an adjective has earned the Word of the Year title. Cambridge Dictionary defines “parasocial” as a connection someone feels with a well-known figure or AI system, even though they have never met.”

Coined in 1956, Reinvented by Social Media

The term emerged in 1956 when sociologists Donald Horton and Richard Wohl studied how viewers formed emotional attachments to television personalities.
Today, social media platforms, influencer culture, and the rise of conversational AI tools have dramatically expanded the phenomenon.

Why Cambridge Chose This Word

Cambridge Dictionary’s Chief Editor Colin McIntosh said the term “captures the zeitgeist of 2025.”
Search data showed massive spikes in queries for “parasocial” throughout the year, reflecting public curiosity and concern.

In a statement, Cambridge Dictionary noted, “As social media amplifies the illusion of closeness between fans and public figures, and as AI companions adopt convincingly human-like personas, the word capturing these one-way relationships has surged into prominence.”

The Taylor Swift Effect

A major example cited was the wave of emotional reactions that followed Taylor Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce. Fans across the world expressed feelings as if they personally knew the couple, driving searches for “parasocial” to new highs.

AI Chatbots Fuelling Modern Parasocial Bonds

Experts say the term gained traction this year partly because many people now treat AI assistants like friends, advisors, or even therapists.
According to Professor Simone Schnall of the University of Cambridge, “We’re in an era where influencers and AI tools both inspire intense, one-sided attachments. These bonds feel real, but they’re ultimately imagined.”
