BJP Workers Stage Black-Flag Protest Against Rahul Gandhi During Mumbai Visit

By: The Trek News Desk

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi faced protests from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers during his visit to Mumbai on Saturday (February 21, 2026). Party supporters waved black flags and raised slogans against him, describing the move as a response to the Youth Congress protest held during the recent AI Summit.

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Mumbai in the morning and proceeded by road to Bhiwandi in Thane district, where he was scheduled to appear before a court in connection with a 2014 defamation case.

The demonstration took place at the Mulund toll naka, where BJP supporters gathered and shouted slogans against the Congress leader. Protesters alleged that Gandhi consistently opposes initiatives introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even on matters they claim are linked to national interest.

One BJP supporter told reporters that the slogans raised by Youth Congress members at the AI Summit had damaged India’s global image, prompting the party to organise the black-flag protest.

In anticipation of possible clashes between ruling and opposition party workers, police authorities deployed strong security arrangements along Gandhi’s route. No major confrontation was reported during the visit.

Congress leader Sachin Sawant criticised the BJP’s protest, calling it an attempt to divert attention from pressing national concerns. He accused the ruling party of avoiding accountability on key issues affecting citizens.

Sawant also questioned the government over the trade agreement with the United States and sought clarification on matters involving US President Donald Trump. He alleged that the interests of farmers in Maharashtra and across India had been compromised.

The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) also objected to the manner of protest. Thane city chief Manoj Pradhan stated that showing black flags to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha undermines democratic values.

He emphasised that while dissent is a fundamental part of democracy, targeting a constitutional office-holder in such a manner is inappropriate.

Following the protest, the political atmosphere in Mumbai and Thane intensified, reflecting the ongoing friction between the ruling party and the opposition. However, due to preventive measures by the administration, the situation remained under control.

The incident once again highlights the sharp political rivalry playing out ahead of key developments on the national stage.
