Opposition Blocks Constitutional Amendment Bill on Women’s Reservation, Government Faces Setback

By: The Trek News Desk

In a significant development in Parliament on Friday (April 17, 2026), a united Opposition defeated a key Constitutional Amendment Bill aimed at accelerating the implementation of women’s reservation. The proposal sought to redistribute Lok Sabha seats based on the 2011 Census.

During voting, the Bill secured 298 votes in favour, while 230 members opposed it. However, it failed to reach the mandatory two-thirds majority required for passing a constitutional amendment. The total strength of the House at the time of voting stood at 528.

The outcome is being viewed as a major political setback for the government, as the Bill was considered a crucial step toward advancing women’s representation in the Lok Sabha.

Following the defeat, the government has decided not to proceed, for now, with the Delimitation Bill and another proposed amendment related to women’s reservation in Union Territories.

Political analysts suggest that the Opposition’s unity played a decisive role in blocking the legislation, dealing a blow to the ruling side’s legislative agenda in Parliament.
