Zohran Mamdani has officially assumed office as the mayor of New York City, creating history as the city’s first Muslim mayor and its youngest leader in decades. His inauguration marks a significant milestone in the political journey of the United States’ largest city.

The Democratic leader took the oath in the early hours of Thursday at Manhattan’s historic City Hall subway station, which is no longer in service. During the ceremony, Mamdani placed his hand on the Quran while pledging to uphold his duties. The oath was administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The unique venue, known for its ornate architecture and arched ceilings, added symbolic weight to the occasion.

Calling the moment the greatest honour of his life, Mamdani said he was humbled by the responsibility entrusted to him. He is set to participate in a second, larger swearing-in ceremony later in the day at City Hall. That public event will be conducted by US Senator Bernie Sanders, a senior political figure whom Mamdani has often credited as an inspiration. Celebrations are expected to continue with a public event along Broadway’s iconic “Canyon of Heroes.”

At just 34, Mamdani takes charge of one of the most complex and high-profile jobs in American politics. Along with being the first Muslim mayor, he is also the first New York City mayor of South Asian heritage and the first to be born on the African continent.

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani placed strong emphasis on affordability and easing the cost-of-living burden faced by residents in one of the world’s most expensive cities. His agenda includes proposals such as free childcare, zero-fare public buses, a rent freeze for close to one million households, and experimental city-operated grocery stores.

Alongside these policy goals, the new mayor will also have to manage the day-to-day challenges of running the city. Issues such as sanitation, snow removal, rodent control, public transport disruptions, and road maintenance are expected to test his administration from the outset.

Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and noted academic Mahmood Mamdani. He moved to New York City with his family at the age of seven. Growing up in the post-9/11 period, he witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by Muslim communities in the US. Mamdani became an American citizen in 2018.

His elevation to the mayor’s office is widely being viewed as the start of a new phase in New York City’s political life, highlighting the city’s diversity and its evolving leadership.
