The United States has carried out a large-scale military operation against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria, targeting more than 70 locations linked to the extremist group. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were conducted in retaliation for a recent deadly attack on American forces that claimed the lives of two US soldiers and one civilian.
CENTCOM said the operation, named “Operation Hawkeye Strike,” involved fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, and artillery units. The coordinated assault focused on IS hideouts and weapons facilities across central Syria, using over 100 precision-guided munitions. Aircraft from Jordan also took part in the mission.
US President Donald Trump stated that American forces are taking strong and decisive action against IS strongholds. In a social media post, he emphasised that the United States would respond firmly to any group that targets American citizens. Trump also claimed that the Syrian government supported the military action.
CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said the US would continue to relentlessly pursue terrorist groups that threaten American personnel and allies in the region. Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the operation not as the start of a new war, but as a clear warning to terrorist organizations.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that IS positions near Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor were among the targets. The monitoring group claimed that a senior IS leader and several fighters were killed in the strikes. However, the Islamic State has not issued any official statement, and independent verification of the claims remains pending.
Earlier, an ambush on US forces in Palmyra was attributed to an IS attacker, who was later killed. Three additional American soldiers were injured in that incident. Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the identity and affiliation of the attacker, and no group has formally claimed responsibility.
Although IS lost its last territorial stronghold in Syria in 2019, the United Nations estimates that between 5,000 and 7,000 IS fighters remain active across Syria and Iraq. The US has maintained a military presence in Syria since 2015 as part of its counterterrorism efforts against the group.
In recent months, Syria has indicated a willingness to work more closely with the international coalition against IS. The November visit of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Washington was described by both sides as the beginning of a new phase in US-Syria relations.
