In a significant move to reinforce the strategic relationship between the United States and Qatar, President Donald Trump has issued a new executive order that guarantees the security of Qatar in the event of any future aggression. This action comes after the unprecedented Israeli airstrikes on Qatar last month, which have raised concerns about regional stability.
The airstrikes, which took place on September 9, targeted Hamas leaders who were reportedly in Doha discussing a US-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza under Qatari mediation. The strikes resulted in the deaths of several Hamas officials and a Qatari security officer, but the key Hamas leaders involved in the discussions were not killed.
The attack, widely condemned by Qatar, was described as “cowardly and treacherous,” escalating tensions between the Gulf nation and Israel. In the aftermath, Israel expressed regret for the death of the Qatari citizen. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally apologized for the incident in a joint call with President Trump to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
In his executive order, Trump emphasized the deep and enduring cooperation between the United States and Qatar, noting that both countries are “bound together by close cooperation” and a long history of mutual support. He referred to Qatar as a “steadfast ally in pursuit of peace, stability, and prosperity,” acknowledging the country’s active role in US-led peace initiatives and conflict mediation efforts in the Middle East.

Trump also reaffirmed America’s commitment to defending Qatar’s sovereignty, stating that the United States would guarantee Qatar’s security and territorial integrity against any external threats. This pledge comes as part of a broader strategy to ensure Qatar’s safety amid increasing regional instability and the potential for foreign aggression.
The executive order makes clear that the United States will prioritize Qatar’s security in light of growing concerns about threats to its sovereignty. This move is seen as a response to Qatar’s demand for swift action in the wake of the Israeli strikes, to prevent future attacks on the country.
To rebuild diplomatic relations, the Trump administration took immediate steps to engage with Qatari officials. On September 16, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Qatar to reaffirm the longstanding security partnership between the two nations. During his visit, Rubio emphasized the shared commitment to a “safer, more stable region” and assured Qatar of continued American support in its efforts to maintain sovereignty and regional security.
In response to the Israeli airstrike, Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Majed al-Ansari made it clear that Qatar remains fully committed to defending its sovereignty. He stated that the country would take all necessary measures to prevent any recurrence of such attacks.
This latest development highlights the strengthening of the US-Qatar alliance, underscoring the two countries’ mutual commitment to regional security and stability, despite the diplomatic challenges posed by Israel’s actions. Both nations have made it clear that they will continue to work closely together in maintaining peace and ensuring the security of the Gulf region.
