A Delhi court has approved interim bail for former JNU student Umar Khalid, allowing him to attend his sister’s wedding. The relief will be effective from December 16 to December 29, 2025. Khalid is an accused in the alleged larger conspiracy related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
Court Lays Down Strict Conditions
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai granted the temporary bail with a detailed set of conditions to ensure strict compliance during the period. According to the court:
- Khalid must furnish a personal bond of ₹20,000 and two sureties of the same amount.
- He is barred from using social media throughout the bail duration.
- He may meet only his family members, relatives, and close friends.
- He must remain at his residence or at the venues of the wedding ceremonies listed in his plea.
- He is prohibited from contacting any witness in the case.
- He must share his mobile phone number with the investigating officer.
The court further directed that Khalid must surrender to prison authorities on the evening of December 29.

Not the First Time He Has Received Such Relief
This is not the first instance of Khalid receiving temporary bail for family functions:
- In 2024, he was granted seven days’ interim bail to attend a family wedding.
- In 2022, he was similarly given short-term relief for a wedding event.
The latest decision comes in response to a request about his sister’s wedding, with the court ensuring that strict safeguards remain in place to prevent any misuse of the bail conditions.
