In a significant move to strengthen the educational and business ties between the UK and India, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the opening of nine British university campuses across India. This initiative is designed to enhance educational collaboration between the two nations and leverage the opportunities presented by the UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
During a press conference at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai, Prime Minister Starmer expressed his enthusiasm for the growing demand for high-quality higher education in India, saying,
“The demand for the best quality higher education in India is extremely high. I am thrilled to announce that more British universities will be setting up campuses in India, making the UK India’s leading international higher education provider and helping us deliver on our Vision 2035.”
Expansion of British Universities in India
This expansion of British universities will open new avenues for Indian students to access world-class education. The Lancaster University has already initiated the process for opening a campus in Bengaluru, having signed a Letter of Intent (LOI). Additionally, the University of Surrey has received approval to establish its campus in GIFT City, Gujarat, further bolstering the UK’s educational presence in India.
The establishment of these campuses will enable Indian students to access top-tier British education, facilitating greater academic exchange and encouraging innovation and research collaborations.

No New Visa Deal in the Picture
While the announcement of new campuses signals an increase in collaboration between the two nations, Prime Minister Starmer clarified that visa negotiations are not a part of the ongoing discussions. He emphasized that the primary focus of his visit is to build on the already established free trade agreement, which was signed earlier this year and is set to be implemented next year.
Starmer remarked,
“Visa discussions are not part of our plans. The main goal of this visit is to maximize the opportunities offered by the free trade agreement.”
Strengthening Educational and Economic Ties
The opening of British university campuses in India is a strong indicator of the deepening educational and economic relationship between the UK and India. This collaboration is expected to bring improvements in India’s higher education landscape, offer more research opportunities, and boost innovation.
Through this expansion, UK universities will offer Indian students access to advanced academic resources and a global perspective, preparing them to compete on the international stage.
A New Era in UK-India Relations
This move signals a new chapter in UK-India relations, as both countries continue to strengthen their trade and educational partnerships. As these new campuses open across India, they will not only create fresh opportunities for students, researchers, and professionals but also contribute to India’s evolving educational system.
The launch of British university campuses in India represents a significant step toward creating more interconnected, dynamic, and mutually beneficial relations between the two nations. It is expected to foster greater educational and technological collaboration, driving India’s growth in the global knowledge economy.
