Delhi Police have arrested two additional accused in connection with the violence that erupted in the Turkman Gate area of the national capital. With these latest arrests, the total number of people taken into custody in the case has increased to 18, a senior police official confirmed on Sunday, January 11, 2025.

According to the police, strict security arrangements remain in place in sensitive pockets of Turkman Gate to prevent any further disturbance. Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed across the area to maintain law and order. Authorities are also using drone surveillance and extensive CCTV monitoring to keep a constant watch on the situation.

A senior officer said, “The area is under continuous drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring. At present, the situation is completely peaceful and under control.”

Investigation Accelerated Using Digital Evidence
Police stated that the investigation is progressing swiftly, with a strong focus on digital evidence. Efforts are underway to identify individuals who allegedly spread misinformation on social media, which is believed to have played a role in instigating stone pelting and violence.

How the Violence Broke Out
As per police sources, the unrest began on the intervening night of January 6 and 7 during an anti-encroachment drive near the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque in the Ramlila Maidan area. Tensions escalated after misleading information circulated on social media, claiming that a mosque opposite Turkman Gate was being demolished, prompting a large gathering at the site.

The crowd allegedly pelted stones and glass bottles at police personnel, leaving five officers injured, including the local station house officer. Police were forced to use tear gas shells and mild force to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control.

Delhi Police have reiterated that constant vigilance is being maintained in the area and strict action will continue against anyone attempting to spread rumours or disrupt public order.
