Trump Slams UK Over Chagos Agreement, Publicly Shares Private Message from Macron

By: The Trek News Desk

US President Donald Trump has strongly criticised the British government’s decision to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, calling the move harmful to America’s national security interests. Linking the issue to wider strategic concerns, Trump claimed that such decisions are among the reasons the United States needs to assert control over Greenland.

Trump’s remarks mark a clear departure from his earlier stance. When the agreement between the United Kingdom and Mauritius was finalised in May, the US administration had openly welcomed the deal. At the time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described it as a historic step and praised both countries for their leadership and long-term vision.

In a recent post on his social media platform, however, Trump accused the UK, despite being a key NATO ally, of handing over Diego Garcia “without any valid reason.” Diego Garcia, which forms part of the Chagos archipelago, hosts a strategically important US-UK military base. Under the agreement, the base will continue to operate under a 99-year lease arrangement.

Calling the decision a “major act of foolishness,” Trump argued that it weakens US security and reinforces the need for stronger strategic control in critical regions such as Greenland.

Adding to the controversy, Trump also released a screenshot of a private message exchanged with French President Emmanuel Macron. Sent via the Signal messaging app, the message showed Macron questioning Trump’s approach toward Greenland, stating that he did not understand the rationale behind it. Macron also proposed holding a G7 meeting in Paris on Thursday and invited Trump to a dinner in the French capital the same day.
