US President Donald Trump has indicated that the United States is beginning to engage in dialogue with Cuba. This development comes amid tighter measures aimed at restricting the island nation’s oil supplies.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday night while travelling to Florida, President Trump said Washington has “started talking to Cuba.” He suggested that recent actions targeting Cuba’s energy lifelines could prompt the country to consider negotiations.
In recent weeks, the US administration has taken steps to curb oil shipments to Cuba, first cutting off supplies from Venezuela and later increasing pressure on Mexico. Following the removal of Venezuela’s former President Nicolás Maduro, oil exports from Venezuela to Cuba were halted, making Cuba heavily reliant on Mexico for its energy needs.
Earlier this week, President Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods imported from countries that sell or transport oil to Cuba. This decision has placed Mexico under significant pressure, as it emerged as a key oil supplier to Cuba after Venezuelan shipments stopped.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has warned that such measures could lead to a humanitarian crisis in Cuba. She stated that Mexico would explore alternative ways to continue assisting the island nation.
However, President Trump dismissed concerns over a humanitarian fallout, asserting that the Cuban government would likely seek a deal with the United States. He claimed that Cuba’s leadership is in a weakened position and predicted that an agreement could be reached in the future.
While Trump did not provide details regarding the scope or timing of any talks, he said the US approach could remain “measured and constructive.” He also reiterated his belief that Cuba could become “free again” through negotiations.
