US President Donald Trump has formally launched a new international initiative titled the “Board of Peace” during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, signing the charter that brings the body into official existence. The initiative has been projected by Trump as a platform aimed at addressing and resolving global conflicts. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced at the ceremony that the charter has come into effect, making the Board of Peace a recognised international organisation.
Several countries have agreed to join the initiative following Trump’s invitation. These include Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Egypt, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. However, several major nations, among them China, Germany, Italy, Paraguay, Russia, Slovenia, Türkiye and Ukraine, have so far not taken a definitive position on participation.
Returning to the World Economic Forum after a gap of six years, Trump used his address to describe the United States as the world’s “economic engine” while sharply criticising Europe, saying it was not moving in the right direction. His speech was also marked by renewed emphasis on his long-standing view that American control over Greenland is essential for both national and global security. According to Trump, only the United States can safeguard such a vast and strategically important territory.
Earlier in the day, India’s Minister for Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, addressed a separate session at Davos, where he said that merely building large-scale large language models (LLMs) does not automatically give countries a geopolitical advantage. He stressed that the real returns from massive investments in artificial intelligence would accrue to nations that can deploy these technologies in a commercially viable and effective manner.
At the launch event of the Board of Peace, Trump also made a significant statement on Gaza, asserting that the region would be fully demilitarised and rebuilt. He said the aim was to transform Gaza into a peaceful and livable area through reconstruction.
In addition, Trump indicated a willingness to engage in dialogue with Iran. He said Tehran wants to hold talks with Washington and that the United States is prepared to do so. Recalling last year’s US strikes on Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities, Trump said such actions were necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, while underlining that diplomatic channels remain open.
Trump’s remarks and the unveiling of the Board of Peace have once again placed the United States at the centre of global political discussions. As the initiative takes shape, international attention is now focused on how other countries will respond and whether the new body will play a meaningful role in global peace efforts.
