US authorities have taken a suspect into custody following a deadly shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island that resulted in the deaths of two students and left nine others injured. Police described the detained individual as a “person of interest,” believed to be in his early 20s. American media outlets have identified the suspect as Benjamin Erickson.

The shooting occurred on Saturday at around 4:00 pm local time (9:00 pm GMT) inside the Holley Engineering Building, located on the eastern side of the university campus. Officials said a gunman entered a classroom and began firing, triggering panic and a large-scale emergency response across the Ivy League institution.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that seven of the injured students are in stable condition, one remains in critical condition, and another has since been released from hospital care. While the names of the victims have not been officially disclosed, Brown University President Christina Paxson stated that all those killed and injured in the incident were students.

In a statement issued on Sunday, President Paxson said parts of the campus remain closed as law enforcement agencies continue their investigation. As a precautionary measure, approximately 2,000 students were moved to safe locations overnight. She also expressed gratitude toward local residents and members of the university community who offered shelter and assistance during the crisis.

Meanwhile, Michael Ulku-Steiner, head of Durham Academy in North Carolina, confirmed that one of the school’s former students, Kendall Turner, was among those injured in the attack. He said the school community stands in solidarity with the victim, her family, and everyone affected at Brown University.

Earlier, police released CCTV images showing a man dressed in black walking away from the scene shortly after the shooting. However, officers reported that no firearm was recovered during an extensive search of the building. FBI Director Kash Patel later revealed on social media platform X that the suspect was detained at a hotel in Coventry early Sunday morning following a lead provided by Providence Police.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez stated that investigators are not seeking any additional suspects at this time and are working closely with prosecutors to gather evidence. Hundreds of local police officers and federal agents were deployed on Saturday as part of the manhunt.

Speaking from the White House, President Donald Trump offered his prayers for the swift recovery of the injured students and conveyed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. Mayor Smiley also confirmed that a previously issued shelter-in-place order has been lifted, and a community vigil is scheduled for Sunday evening.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the Brown University attack brings the total number of mass shooting incidents in the United States this year to 389. The organization defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people, excluding the attacker, are killed or injured.
