A senior officer of the Russian Armed Forces was killed on Monday morning after a car bomb exploded in Russia’s capital, Moscow. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, aged 56, sustained critical injuries when an explosive device planted beneath his vehicle detonated. He later died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Officials stated that Lt. Gen. Sarvarov was heading the operational training department of the Russian military. Following the incident, authorities have launched a criminal investigation on charges related to murder and the illegal handling of explosives. Investigators are also examining possible involvement of foreign intelligence agencies, though Ukraine has issued no official statement regarding the incident.

The explosion occurred in a parking area near a residential apartment complex in southern Moscow. Visuals from the scene show a severely damaged white car, with its doors blown apart, while nearby parked vehicles also suffered damage from the blast.

According to reports in Russian media, General Sarvarov had an extensive military career. He was involved in operations during the Ossetian-Ingush conflict and the Chechen wars in the 1990s and early 2000s. He also played a role in Russian military missions in Syria between 2015 and 2016.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was informed about the general’s death shortly after the incident.

Notably, since Russia launched its large-scale military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, several high-ranking Russian military officials have been targeted in Moscow. In April, General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a similar car bomb attack, while in December 2024, General Igor Kirillov died after a remotely detonated explosive device was triggered. Although a Ukrainian source later claimed responsibility for Kirillov’s killing, no official confirmation was made.

As a matter of policy, Ukraine does not publicly acknowledge or claim responsibility for such targeted operations.
