Pope Leo Begins First Foreign Tour in Turkey, Set to Visit Lebanon Next

By: The Trek News Desk

Pope Leo XIV has officially embarked on the first international journey of his papacy, touching down in Turkey to participate in a landmark Christian anniversary before continuing to Lebanon. The Vatican confirmed that the schedule remains unchanged despite recent Israeli airstrikes on Beirut.

“Humanity Can Stand United” – Pope Leo

Speaking aboard his flight to Ankara, Pope Leo captured the spirit of his trip in a single message, “Despite differences of religion, identity or belief, every human being can truly be a brother or sister to one another.”

The emphasis on unity echoes his long-standing theme of “bridge-building,” a philosophy he highlighted from the moment he addressed the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica following his election in May.

Commemorating 1,700 Years Since the Council of Nicaea

One of the most significant moments of the visit will take place in Iznik, the modern city built on the ancient site of Nicaea. Here, the Pope will join leaders from various Christian denominations to mark the 1,700th anniversary of the historic Council of 325 AD, where over 200 bishops affirmed the belief in Jesus as the Son of God, laying the foundation for what would become the Nicene Creed.

Though the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split centuries later, the gathering is expected to highlight themes of reconciliation and unity.

Interfaith Engagement: A Visit to the Blue Mosque

Continuing a tradition followed by both his predecessors, Pope Leo will also visit Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque. Meetings with prominent religious leaders are planned, emphasising interfaith dialogue before he proceeds to Lebanon for the second leg of his tour.

Lebanon Trip to Proceed Despite Recent Airstrikes

The Vatican stated firmly that the Pope’s Lebanon visit will move forward as planned.
In Beirut, Pope Leo will meet young people and Christian communities, who make up nearly one-third of the country’s population, offering support amid regional tensions.

Mass at Beirut Port Explosion Site

On the final day of the trip, Pope Leo will celebrate Mass along the Beirut waterfront, at the site of the devastating 2020 port explosion that killed more than 200 people and injured over 7,000.
The ceremony will serve as a symbolic gesture of remembrance and solidarity with affected families.

A Papacy Balancing Tradition and Reform

Over the past six months, Pope Leo has spoken about issues such as migrant dignity, but has remained noticeably cautious compared to Pope Francis, known for his vocal political stances.
This measured approach has led both progressive and conservative groups within the Church to view him as a figure open to their perspectives, helping him maintain broad internal consensus.

Eyes on His Middle East Commentary

As he meets Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and senior Lebanese officials, observers will watch closely to see whether Pope Leo comments directly on Middle Eastern conflicts.
Traditionally, the Pope shares his reflections during the return flight press conference, offering potential insight once the tour concludes.

A Pope Speaking English, with a Chicago Accent

Confirming earlier speculation, the Vatican announced that Pope Leo will deliver most of his public addresses in Turkey in English, letting his distinct Chicagoan accent be heard widely.
He is also expected to speak partially in French while in Lebanon.
