North Korea Unveils New Long-Range Missile at Grand Military Parade, Test Likely Soon

By: The Trek News Desk

In a high-profile show of military strength, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a large-scale military parade on Friday night, where the regime showcased its latest and most powerful nuclear-capable weapons. The centrepiece of the event was the debut of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), named the Hwasong-20, which experts believe could be tested in the coming weeks.

Held to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party, the parade reflected Kim’s tightening grip on power and his ongoing efforts to bolster North Korea’s strategic deterrence, particularly against long-time adversaries like the United States and South Korea.

Strategic Display: Kim’s Latest Missile Reveal

According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the parade featured the Hwasong-20, a never-before-tested ICBM described as the regime’s “most powerful nuclear strategic weapon system” to date. While no official testing has yet occurred, the weapon’s public debut is being viewed as a clear signal that a trial launch may be imminent.

In addition to the Hwasong-20, North Korea also displayed a range of short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and supersonic weapons systems previously claimed to be capable of delivering tactical nuclear strikes on targets across South Korea.

The display comes amid renewed tensions in the region, as Pyongyang continues to invest in military advancements despite growing international sanctions and diplomatic isolation.

Kim’s Message: Build an ‘Invincible Force’

During the parade, Kim Jong Un delivered a speech calling for the continued development of North Korea’s defence capabilities. He emphasized the need to transform the military into an “invincible force capable of neutralizing any threat.”

Interestingly, Kim made no direct reference to either Washington or Seoul during his remarks. However, given the current geopolitical context, the message was widely interpreted as a warning to both nations, which have consistently condemned Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions and missile programs.

Kim’s speech appeared focused on projecting confidence and resilience in the face of international pressure. His words reaffirmed the regime’s commitment to expanding its arsenal, strengthening national sovereignty, and maintaining a posture of readiness against perceived threats.

Global Concerns on the Rise

The military parade and the unveiling of the Hwasong-20 have once again triggered concern across the global community. U.S. and South Korean officials have warned that any future missile tests could destabilize the region and spark a new wave of diplomatic and security challenges.

Japan and South Korea, both within striking range of many of North Korea’s missile systems, are particularly alarmed by the growing sophistication and frequency of Pyongyang’s weapons development.

Security analysts suggest that the parade was not just about internal propaganda but a deliberate message to the international community that North Korea remains undeterred in its military ambitions.

North Korea’s latest military parade marks a significant step in its ongoing weapons development program. It underscores Kim Jong Un’s determination to establish his regime as a dominant nuclear power in the region. The public appearance of the Hwasong-20 could indicate that North Korea is readying itself for yet another high-stakes missile test, one that may escalate tensions across the Asia-Pacific.
