Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has expressed regret over the controversy surrounding a Class 8 Social Science textbook published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). The Minister clarified that there was no intention to insult or undermine the judiciary and assured that accountability would be fixed following a thorough inquiry.
Mr Pradhan stated that as soon as the government became aware of the disputed chapter related to the judiciary, the distribution of the textbook was immediately halted. He added that a detailed investigation would be conducted and appropriate action would be taken against those responsible for drafting the contentious content.
The statement comes in the wake of strong observations by the Supreme Court of India, which ordered a complete ban on the Class 8 textbook in question. The Court directed authorities to seize all physical and digital copies of the publication.
A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, remarked that the contents appeared to be part of a “well-orchestrated attempt” to tarnish the image of the judiciary. The Court also issued notices to the NCERT Director and the Secretary of the Department of School Education, asking them to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against those involved.
The controversial chapter reportedly mentioned issues such as corruption within the judiciary, a massive backlog of pending cases, and a shortage of judges as key challenges facing the system. The Supreme Court reacted sharply, asserting that it would not permit any action that could damage the credibility and integrity of the judicial institution.
Following the Court’s strong remarks, NCERT issued a public apology for what it described as “inappropriate content.” The body stated that the chapter would be rewritten after consultation with appropriate authorities to ensure accuracy and sensitivity.
Sources indicated that the government was also displeased with the references included in the curriculum and had directed that the material be withdrawn immediately.
Reiterating the government’s position, the education minister emphasised that the judiciary commands the highest respect and that all directives issued by the Court would be strictly followed. The matter is now under scrutiny, with further action expected after the completion of the inquiry.
