The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is preparing to return to power in Bihar, with the government formation process gaining momentum on Wednesday. The Janata Dal (United) has unanimously elected Nitish Kumar as the leader of its legislative party, a move that paves the way for the alliance to stake a claim to form the next government on November 20.
Following the internal meeting, Nitish Kumar is expected to meet Governor Arif Mohammad Khan later in the evening to formally request the commencement of the formation process. He will also resign as the head of the outgoing government. According to officials, the current Assembly will be dissolved on Wednesday, clearing the path for the new administration.
Nitish Kumar to Be Sworn in for 10th Term on Thursday
Nitish Kumar will take the oath of office on Thursday at Patna’s iconic Gandhi Maidan, marking his tenth term as Chief Minister. JD(U)’s working national president, Sanjay Jha, said Kumar will first be elected as the leader of the JD(U) legislative party, followed by his formal selection as the leader of the NDA during a joint meeting of all five alliance partners.
Bihar minister Shrawon Kumar confirmed that several new ministers will be sworn in alongside Kumar during the ceremony.
Top National Leaders Expected at the Ceremony
The swearing-in event is likely to see the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and chief ministers of NDA-governed states. Security has been significantly strengthened across Patna, especially around Gandhi Maidan, in anticipation of the high-profile gathering.

A Strong Majority Brings NDA Back to Power
In the recent Assembly elections, the NDA secured a decisive victory with 202 seats in the 243-member House. The seat tally is as follows:
- BJP: 89
- JD(U): 85
- LJP (RV): 19
- HAM: 5
- RLM: 4
The coalition’s strong mandate reinforces Nitish Kumar’s central position in Bihar’s political landscape, as he prepares once again to lead the state.
