The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has released the largest-ever collection of documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, making millions of previously confidential records public. The release includes nearly three million pages, around 180,000 images, and approximately 2,000 videos, disclosed under a transparency law enacted last year that required the government to publish all Epstein-related materials.
The documents were made public several weeks after the DOJ missed the deadline set under the law, which was signed by President Donald Trump. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the release marks the completion of an extensive review process aimed at ensuring transparency while fulfilling legal obligations to the American public.
According to officials, the files contain detailed records of Epstein’s time in custody, including psychological assessments, information related to his death while incarcerated, and investigative material connected to his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been convicted for assisting in the trafficking of underage girls. The release also includes a large volume of emails exchanged between Epstein and prominent global figures, many of which date back more than a decade.
The documents further highlight Epstein’s connections with members of the British elite. Email exchanges reference a person identified as “The Duke,” widely believed to be Former Prince Andrew, Duke of York, discussing private dinners at Buckingham Palace and a proposal to meet a 26-year-old Russian woman. While the correspondence does not provide direct evidence of criminal activity, Former Prince Andrew has remained under scrutiny for his past association with Epstein and has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
Additional emails appear to involve Sarah Ferguson, Andrew’s former wife. In a 2009 message, she referred to Epstein as a close and special friend, expressing admiration for him. This exchange took place while Epstein was under house arrest following his 2008 conviction.
The files also reveal financial interactions involving Epstein and Lord Peter Mandelson’s husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva. In 2009, Epstein reportedly transferred approximately £10,000 following an email request outlining educational expenses. Lord Mandelson, who later served briefly as the UK’s ambassador to the United States in 2024, has acknowledged his past association with Epstein and said he regrets having trusted him.
President Donald Trump is mentioned hundreds of times in the documents. However, the DOJ clarified that many allegations referencing Trump originated from unverified tips submitted to the FBI ahead of the 2020 election and lacked supporting evidence. Both the White House and the Justice Department reiterated that no credible accusations linking Trump to Epstein’s crimes have been substantiated.
Email exchanges between Epstein and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk from 2012 and 2013 are also included. The correspondence discusses potential travel and parties on Epstein’s private island, though there is no evidence that Musk ever visited the location. Musk has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the case.
Some draft emails authored by Epstein contain serious allegations against Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Gates’ representatives strongly denied the claims, calling them false and defamatory, and stated that the messages reflect Epstein’s attempts to damage reputations after relationships deteriorated.
While the DOJ maintains that the document release process is now complete, Democratic lawmakers argue that approximately 2.5 million files may still be withheld. Congressman Ro Khanna has stated that he will closely examine the redactions, which under the law are permitted only to protect victims or ongoing investigations.
For years, Epstein’s case has fuelled allegations that influential individuals were shielded from accountability. However, the Justice Department has emphasised that the released files do not contain prosecutable evidence against unnamed individuals and that any credible information would have led to criminal charges.
