Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and unveiled a massive $17.5 billion investment package aimed at accelerating India’s transition toward an “AI-first future.” The company confirmed that this will be its largest-ever investment in Asia, underscoring India’s rising importance in the global technology landscape.
Following the meeting, Nadella posted on X (formerly Twitter), calling his interaction with Prime Minister Modi an “inspiring conversation” centred around India’s rapidly expanding AI potential.
He wrote, “To support India’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing $17.5 billion, our largest investment in Asia, to build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities required for the country’s AI-first future.”
A Major Push for AI and Cloud Expansion in India
This announcement adds to Microsoft’s earlier commitment this year to invest $3 billion in India to strengthen cloud and AI infrastructure, build new data centres, and expand nationwide AI skilling programs.
As part of its long-term strategy, Microsoft plans to equip 10 million Indians with AI skills over the next five years, paving the way for a more digitally empowered workforce.
At the Bengaluru edition of the Microsoft AI Tour, Nadella said, “India is quickly becoming a global hub for AI innovation. The investments announced today reaffirm our commitment to helping India embrace an AI-first economy and ensuring that individuals and organisations across the country benefit from this transformation.”
Expanding Data Centre Footprint for AI Growth
Microsoft currently operates three data centre regions in India, with a fourth scheduled to go live in 2026.
In a recent blog post, the company said that the new investment aims to develop a scalable, high-performance AI computing ecosystem that can support the explosive growth of Indian AI startups, research institutions, and enterprise adoption.
India’s AI Momentum Draws Global Interest
Nadella’s latest announcement reinforces the growing sentiment among global tech giants that India is on track to become one of the world’s leading AI powerhouses. With rapid digital adoption, a booming startup ecosystem, and proactive government initiatives, India is emerging as a crucial market for next-generation technologies.
