In a major stride toward sustainable development and renewable energy adoption, Meerut College inaugurated a 125-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant on Monday, November 3, 2025.

The project, developed under the Uttar Pradesh Government’s new Solar Energy Policy, has been installed in RESCO mode, a model designed to promote solar energy generation on government and semi-government buildings across the state.

The solar facility was officially inaugurated by Mr Vivek Kumar Garg, the college’s Honorary Minister. The ceremony was attended by the principal, faculty members, students, and other distinguished guests.

“A Model for Environmental Progress,” says Vivek Kumar Garg

Addressing the gathering, Mr Garg emphasised that the new solar installation is not only a step toward energy independence but also a significant contribution to environmental protection.

“This 125-kW solar plant will generate nearly 1.5 lakh units of electricity annually, reducing the college’s dependency on conventional power sources. Along with major savings on electricity bills, this initiative will help significantly lower carbon emissions,” he said.

“Solar Power Is Clean, Endless, and Pollution-Free” – Prof. Seema Pawar

Professor Seema Pawar highlighted the broader environmental impact of adopting renewable energy.

Solar energy is the cleanest and most sustainable source of power. It harnesses sunlight without depleting natural resources or releasing harmful gases. By using solar power, we reduce our dependence on coal, diesel, and petrol, protecting both the planet and our future generations, she said.

A Live Learning Lab for Students

Dr Manoj Siwach, the coordinator of the solar project, shared that the installation will also serve an educational purpose for students.

“This solar plant will act as a hands-on learning lab, allowing students to gain technical insights into renewable energy systems and understand the importance of clean energy solutions,” he said.

A Vision of Green Growth

The 125-kW solar plant at Meerut College is being hailed as a historic initiative toward energy self-reliance, environmental conservation, and sustainable growth.

Beyond powering the campus, the project stands as a symbol of inspiration for institutions across Uttar Pradesh, encouraging the next generation to embrace green energy and sustainability.
