On the eve of the G20 Summit in South Africa, Ukraine’s key allies signalled that they will work collectively to reinforce and rebalance the White House’s proposed peace framework aimed at ending the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that international partners remain committed to securing a “durable and just peace.”
Zelensky Warns of “One of the Hardest Moments in Our History”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a strong public warning, saying Kyiv is facing “intense pressure” to accept a peace plan whose leaked details appear tilted toward Russia’s interests.
Zelensky held separate phone calls with the leaders of the UK, France, and Germany to discuss the growing diplomatic strain.
Growing European Unease Over U.S. Draft
The U.S. proposal revives several conditions Kyiv has previously rejected, including:
- Withdrawal from parts of eastern Ukraine still under its control
- A reduction in Ukraine’s military strength
- A pledge to never join NATO
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the moment “highly dangerous,” arguing that Russia has no legal entitlement to concessions after invading a sovereign neighbour.

Starmer: Supports Trump’s Initiative, But Says Plan Needs Strengthening
Speaking ahead of the G20 discussions, Starmer said allies will review the draft and work to improve it for the next negotiation phase, adding that the UK supports President Trump’s push for peace.
He reiterated that Ukraine has consistently shown a willingness to negotiate, while Russia has prolonged the conflict through continued offensives.
Trump Increases Pressure: “Ukraine Has No Choice but to Approve”
U.S. President Donald Trump warned that without a deal, Ukraine could “lose even more territory soon.”
According to Trump, Kyiv has been given a deadline through Thursday to indicate whether it will accept the plan.
Pentagon Steps in With High-Level Engagement
Reports suggest senior Pentagon officials travelled to Ukraine earlier in the week to discuss the draft.
Ukraine’s defence posture remains heavily dependent on U.S.-supplied advanced weapons and intelligence support.
Kremlin Responds: Open to Talks, But War Will Continue if Needed
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Moscow had received the American plan, saying it could serve as a “basis” for future dialogue, though detailed negotiations have not yet begun.
Putin added that Russia is prepared to “show flexibility,” while also being ready to continue military operations.

Kyiv Prepares Alternatives to U.S. Proposal
Addressing the nation outside his presidential office, Zelensky said:
- “Pressure on us will increase, attempts to weaken or divide us will continue.”
- “We will work calmly with the U.S. and all partners and present our own alternatives.”
U.S. officials have denied claims that Ukraine was excluded from the drafting process.
Key Points from the Leaked Draft Peace Plan
According to leaked details, the proposal includes:
- Ukrainian withdrawal from areas of Donetsk currently under Kyiv’s control
- Recognition of Russian control over Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea
- “Reliable security guarantees” for Ukraine (details still unspecified)
- A pathway for Russia’s reintegration into the global economy, including the lifting of sanctions
- A halt to NATO’s further expansion, paired with an expectation that Russia will not attack its neighbours
Russia currently occupies roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory and continues to make slow but steady gains along the front.
