Kim Jong Un Praises North Korean Troops Fighting Alongside Russia in Ukraine

By: The Trek News Desk

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly praised the country’s soldiers deployed to support Russia in the war against Ukraine, calling their involvement proof of the “prestige and invincible strength” of the North Korean military. His remarks came during the closing session of a key meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK).

Criticism of Officials for “Wrong Ideology” and “Irresponsible Attitude”

According to reports from the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim sharply rebuked certain party officials, accusing them of “distorted ideology, inactivity, and irresponsible behaviour.”
He warned that several “misdeeds and corrupt tendencies” had surfaced and must be immediately corrected.

KCNA did not specify who the criticism targeted, but noted that the party leadership had detected multiple disciplinary “deviations” in recent months.

“Our Military Is the True Guardian of International Justice,” Kim Says

Wrapping up the three-day party gathering, Kim offered special praise for the North Korean soldiers fighting in Ukraine alongside Russian forces.
South Korean intelligence agencies estimate that at least 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more injured during the conflict.

KCNA quoted Kim as saying, “Over the past year, many of our soldiers have taken part in overseas operations, enhancing the reputation of our army.”

He asserted that the deployment demonstrated to the world that North Korea’s military is an “ever-victorious force” and a “genuine defender of international justice.”

Push for Rapid Military Modernisation Amid Global Shifts

Kim emphasised that North Korea is accelerating its military modernisation program in response to “sweeping geopolitical and technological changes.”
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported that Kim views strengthening defence capabilities as the “correct path” to ensure the nation’s long-term security.

Strategic Meeting Ahead of Next Year’s Party Congress

The WPK meeting serves as preparation for the Ninth Party Congress, scheduled for January or February.
Analysts expect Pyongyang to use the congress to outline new strategies on national defence, economic planning, and relations with the United States and South Korea.

Yonhap noted growing speculation that the party may formally codify Kim’s stance, designating the U.S. and South Korea as “two hostile states” in its guiding principles.

South Korea’s Outreach Efforts Rejected by Pyongyang

Since taking office in June, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has introduced several measures aimed at lowering tensions with the North, including:

  • Removing propaganda loudspeakers along the border
  • Prohibiting the distribution of anti-Pyongyang leaflets

Lee has also considered issuing an apology for alleged provocations ordered by former President Yoon Suk-Yeol, who is accused of dispatching drones carrying propaganda messages into North Korean territory to incite military tension.

Despite these conciliatory gestures, Kim Jong Un dismissed the outreach outright, stating he has “no interest in dialogue” with the South Korean leader.
