Iran Parliament Speaker Labels All EU Armed Forces as ‘Terrorist Organisations’

Iran has further escalated its standoff with the European Union after the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament declared that all EU military forces will now be regarded as “terrorist organisations” by Tehran.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf announced a recent decision by the European Union to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity. The EU cited the Guard’s role in suppressing nationwide anti-government protests as the reason behind its move.

Qalibaf stated that Iran’s response is based on a domestic law passed in 2019. That legislation was introduced after the United States formally listed the IRGC as a terrorist group and allows Iran to take reciprocal action against countries that adopt similar measures.

The announcement was made in a highly symbolic setting inside the Iranian parliament, where Qalibaf and several lawmakers appeared wearing Revolutionary Guard uniforms. Qalibaf himself previously served as a senior commander within the IRGC.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts aimed at easing regional tensions are underway. Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, arrived in Iran on Saturday for high-level discussions focused on de-escalation.

According to Qatar’s foreign ministry, Sheikh Mohammed met with Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and reaffirmed Doha’s support for initiatives seeking to reduce tensions and promote stability across the region.

These developments come amid heightened military activity in the area, with a US naval strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln positioned near Iran’s coastline. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had warned of possible intervention following Iran’s crackdown on anti-government demonstrations.
