The Embassy of India in Mexico has issued a safety advisory for Indian nationals following a surge in violence triggered by the killing of a top drug cartel leader. The advisory urges Indian citizens to remain indoors until further notice and avoid all non-essential movement.

The Mexican government confirmed on February 22, 2026, that security forces had killed notorious cartel boss Nemesio Oseguera, also known as “El Mencho.” He was among the most wanted criminals in both Mexico and the United States. In the aftermath of the operation, several regions have reported violent incidents, road blockades, and flight cancellations.

In its advisory, the Indian Embassy specifically cautioned citizens residing in Jalisco state, including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara, as well as Tamaulipas (notably Reynosa and surrounding municipalities), Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León. Ongoing security operations and blocked roads in these areas have heightened concerns over public safety.

The Embassy advised Indian nationals to stay away from areas where law enforcement operations are underway, avoid crowded places, and remain alert to their surroundings. Citizens have also been encouraged to follow local news for real-time updates and step out only if necessary.

In case of emergency, individuals are instructed to follow the guidance of local authorities and dial 911 for immediate assistance. The Embassy also recommended that citizens keep family members and friends informed about their safety and location via phone calls, text messages, or social media.

For urgent support, the Embassy of India in Mexico has activated a helpline: +52 55 4847 7539. Officials have assured the Indian community that the situation is being closely monitored and their safety remains a top priority.
