Large-scale demonstrations were held on Saturday in Denmark and Greenland against the United States’ alleged intentions regarding Greenland. Organised by Greenlandic community groups, the protests witnessed strong public participation, with demonstrators voicing support for Greenland’s sovereignty, democratic system, and civil rights.
According to Uagut, an association representing Greenlanders in Denmark, the protests were aimed at opposing what they describe as US plans to assert control over Greenland. The organisers argue that such ideas go against international law and undermine Greenland’s system of self-governance.
Protests Held at Multiple Locations
In Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, the main rally began at 12:00 pm local time and lasted for about an hour. Protesters later gathered outside the US Embassy to register their opposition. Similar demonstrations were also reported in other Danish cities, including Aarhus, Aalborg, and Odense.
In Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, a protest march was scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. Organisers said participants would carry Greenlandic flags while marching toward the US consulate. Around 900 people confirmed their participation on social media, a significant figure considering Greenland’s population of roughly 57,000.

Rising Tensions Over Greenland
Tensions surrounding Greenland have intensified in recent weeks following repeated remarks by US President Donald Trump expressing his desire for the United States to take control of the Arctic island. He recently hinted at the possibility of imposing economic tariffs on countries that oppose his stance.
Meanwhile, a bipartisan delegation of members from the US Congress has arrived in Denmark on an official visit. The delegation emphasised that President Trump’s territorial ambitions do not reflect the views of the American public as a whole.
European nations have also expressed solidarity with Greenland. A multinational mission involving military officers from several countries, including Germany, is currently active in the region, which is being viewed as a sign of diplomatic and strategic support.
