Gopichand Hinduja, Chairman of Hinduja Group, Passes Away at 85; British Lawmaker Pays Tribute

Indian-origin British industrialist and Chairman of the Hinduja Group, Gopichand Parmanand Hinduja, passed away in London on Tuesday at the age of 85. His death was announced by Lord Rami Ranger, a member of the British House of Lords, who described the loss as marking “the end of an era.”

In an emotional statement, Lord Ranger paid heartfelt tribute to Hinduja, calling him “a gracious, humble, and generous soul who dedicated his life to uplifting others.”

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of our dear friend, Mr G.P. Hinduja’s passing. He was one of the most compassionate and community-minded people I have ever known. His demise marks the end of an era, as he was not only a pillar of strength for the Indian diaspora but also a source of guidance and inspiration for many,” Lord Ranger said.

He added, “I had the privilege of knowing him for many years. His wit, his commitment to social causes, and his deep love for both the UK and India were unmatched. The void his passing leaves behind will be impossible to fill. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti.”

Who Was Gopichand Hinduja?

Known widely as G.P. Hinduja, he was one of the most prominent figures in global business and philanthropy. For seven consecutive years, he held the top position as the richest person in the United Kingdom, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

Born in India in 1940, Gopichand Hinduja began his career with his family’s multinational conglomerate, the Hinduja Group, which has operations spanning multiple continents. In 2023, following the passing of his elder brother Srichand Hinduja, who suffered from dementia, Gopichand took over as the group’s chairman.

A graduate of Jai Hind College, Mumbai (Class of 1959), Hinduja went on to receive an Honorary Doctor of Law from the University of Westminster, London, and was also conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Economics by Richmond College, London.
