French authorities have carried out raids at the France-based offices of Elon Musk-owned social media platform X, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that its cybercrime division is leading the operation, with assistance from the European law enforcement agency Europol.

According to prosecutors, the investigation was launched in January 2025 after complaints were filed questioning the functioning of X’s recommendation algorithm and the type of content it promotes. As part of the probe, Elon Musk and former X Chief Executive Officer Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear for hearings scheduled in April.

So far, X has not issued an official response to the latest searches. However, the company has previously criticised the investigation, describing it as an attempt to curb free speech.

In an official statement, the Paris prosecutor’s office said the raids are aimed at ensuring that X complies fully with French laws. The scope of the investigation was reportedly widened in July 2025 following reports of sexually explicit deepfake material and content denying the Holocaust circulating on the platform.

At the time, X rejected the allegations, calling the expanded probe politically motivated and denying any manipulation of its algorithm.

In a notable move, the prosecutor’s office also announced that it would discontinue use of X for official communication and would instead share updates through LinkedIn and Instagram going forward.

The action comes amid growing scrutiny across Europe over the accountability of major social media platforms and stricter enforcement of digital content regulations.
