U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked global debate after sharing a post on his social media platform Truth Social, in which he described himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela.” The post features Trump’s official portrait, listing the controversial title along with his designation as the 45th and 47th President of the United States, a position he assumed on January 20, 2025.

The post comes amid dramatic developments in Venezuela. On January 3, 2026, the United States carried out what it described as a major overnight military operation, during which Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was detained and taken out of the country. The operation reportedly involved a series of coordinated strikes, which U.S. officials portrayed as a demonstration of American military strength.

Hours after the operation, President Trump stated that the United States would temporarily take charge of Venezuela’s administration. He said Washington would oversee the governance of Caracas until a “safe, orderly and proper political transition” could be ensured. Trump also claimed that Venezuela’s vast oil reserves would be utilised, with large quantities of oil to be sold to other nations.

However, the situation inside Venezuela reflects a different reality. Following Maduro’s absence, the country’s Supreme Court’s Constitutional Chamber ordered that Vice President Delcy Rodríguez assume the role of acting president. According to the court, the decision was taken to maintain administrative continuity and safeguard national security.

Delcy Rodríguez has strongly criticised the U.S. action, reaffirming Nicolás Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate president and demanding his immediate release. The unfolding events have triggered serious political and diplomatic questions, not only for Venezuela but also for the international community at large.

As tensions continue to rise, global attention remains firmly focused on how relations between the United States and Venezuela will evolve in the days ahead.
