Deadly Snowfall Grips Northern Japan, 35 Killed; Authorities Issue Fresh Alerts

By: The Trek News Desk

Life across northern Japan has been severely disrupted after relentless snowfall over the past two weeks claimed at least 35 lives nationwide, according to government officials. Many of the fatalities were linked to snow-clearing activities, with victims either slipping on icy surfaces or suffering sudden cardiac events while shovelling heavy snow.

As of Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the extreme weather has affected 15 prefectures, with snow accumulation in the hardest-hit areas reaching nearly two meters (around 6.5 feet). The thick snow cover has not only crippled daily routines but has also complicated rescue and relief operations.

The highest number of deaths has been reported from Niigata Prefecture, where 12 people lost their lives in snow-related incidents. Among them was a man in his 50s who was found collapsed on the roof of his house in Uonuma City on January 21. In another incident, a man in his 70s was discovered lying outside his home in Nagaoka City and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Local authorities believe he fell while removing snow from his roof.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara cautioned that risks may increase even as temperatures begin to rise. He warned that melting snow could trigger landslides and create dangerously slippery conditions. Urging caution, he advised residents to wear protective helmets and use safety ropes while clearing snow, emphasising the importance of personal safety.

Following the onset of heavy snowfall on January 20, emergency response teams were deployed across Niigata and neighbouring regions. Additional fatalities have been confirmed in Akita Prefecture (7 deaths) and Yamagata Prefecture (5 deaths).

Nationwide, 393 people have been injured, with 126 reported in serious condition. Niigata alone accounts for 42 of these severe injuries. Property damage has also been reported, with 14 homes affected, including three in Niigata and eight in Aomori Prefecture.

While the exact cause of the unusually intense snowfall remains unclear, snow-related accidents are a recurring concern in Japan during the winter months. Official data shows that 68 people died in similar incidents during the previous winter season.

The meteorological department has forecast another spell of heavy snowfall over the coming weekend, raising fears that conditions could worsen. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel as the region braces for more severe weather.
