At least 11 people lost their lives, and several others sustained serious injuries in a tragic road accident reported early Thursday morning in Karnataka’s Chitradurga district. The incident occurred near Hiriyur on National Highway-48 when a container truck rammed into a private luxury sleeper bus from behind.

According to preliminary information, the bus was travelling from Bengaluru to the coastal town of Gokarna via Shivamogga. Following the collision, the bus caught fire, triggering panic among passengers. Amid the flames, a few travellers managed to escape by jumping out of the burning vehicle, narrowly saving their lives.

Local police and emergency response teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving the alert. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, where the condition of some passengers is reported to be critical.

Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy stated that initial findings suggest over speeding may have led to the crash. He added that Transport Commissioner Yogeshwar and Assistant Commissioner Omkareshwari have been instructed to visit the accident site, conduct a spot inspection, and submit a detailed report.

Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the incident, and efforts are underway to identify the deceased. The tragic mishap has once again raised serious concerns over road safety and high-speed driving on national highways.
