The onset of Chillai-Kalan, Kashmir’s most severe 40-day winter phase, has been marked by a noticeable shift in weather conditions across the Valley. Meteorological officials have issued a warning of an impending spell of rain and snowfall, with higher-altitude areas expected to receive moderate to heavy snowfall in the coming days. Interestingly, minimum temperatures showed a slight improvement just a day before the harsh winter period officially began.
According to the weather department, December 20 and 21 are expected to witness widespread unsettled weather across Kashmir. These dates coincide with the start of Chillai-Kalan, which runs annually from December 21 to January 31 and is known for bringing the coldest temperatures of the season.
Forecasts indicate substantial snowfall in the upper reaches, while lower and plain areas may experience light to moderate rainfall. The meteorological office has issued a specific advisory for the higher regions of Kupwara, Bandipora, and Ganderbal, where heavier snowfall is likely on December 21. Travellers and transport operators have been urged to stay alert and follow advisories issued by the administration and traffic authorities.
In response to the changing weather outlook, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level review meeting to assess administrative preparedness for potential snowfall and precipitation. The meeting evaluated the readiness of various departments across both Kashmir and Jammu divisions, focusing on coordination and emergency response planning.
Addressing officials, the Chief Minister noted that winter preparedness measures are largely in place but emphasised that their effectiveness will ultimately depend on smooth execution at the ground level. He added that the expected weather conditions over the weekend provide an important opportunity for the administration to test and further strengthen its winter response systems ahead of heavier snowfall later in the season.
The administration has assured the public that all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure uninterrupted essential services and to minimise inconvenience to daily life during the harsh winter period.
