A powerful explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in the heart of Delhi on Monday evening left at least eight people dead and several others injured, sending shockwaves through the historic area. The incident occurred around 7:05 PM, when a car parked outside Gate No. 1 of the metro station exploded.
According to eyewitnesses, the blast originated from a Swift Dzire car, and the impact was so strong that it shattered the windows of nearby vehicles and sparked fires in several cars parked in the vicinity. Residents in nearby buildings reported hearing a loud explosion that echoed across the neighbourhood.
The Delhi Fire Services confirmed that seven fire tenders were dispatched immediately after receiving the distress call. Firefighters managed to extinguish flames engulfing three to four vehicles. The police have since sealed off the area and declared a high alert across the national capital.
An injured auto-rickshaw driver who witnessed the blast recounted his narrow escape:
“The car in front of me was barely two feet away. Suddenly, there was a huge explosion, and everything was on fire within seconds. I don’t know if it was a bomb or something else.”
Police officials and forensic teams reached the site soon after the incident and have launched a detailed investigation. While authorities have yet to confirm the cause, preliminary findings suggest a possible link to terrorist activity.

A senior Delhi Police officer said that all major entry and exit points in the city have been put under heightened surveillance.
The explosion coincides with a breakthrough earlier in the day when Jammu and Kashmir Police, in coordination with central agencies, busted a terror module connected to Jaish-e-Mohammed and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind. The network reportedly extended across Kashmir, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
During raids in Faridabad, authorities arrested eight suspects, including three doctors, and recovered 360 kilograms of explosives and several weapons from a rented house in Dhauj village.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have handed over the case to the Special Cell, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) joining the probe to determine whether the Red Fort blast has any connection with the recently uncovered terror network.
