On Monday, Canada officially labelled the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a “terrorist entity,” marking a significant step in addressing rising security concerns linked to the gang’s criminal activities.

The Canadian government confirmed that the gang primarily operates from outside India, but has extensive networks across various countries, including Canada.

This move comes amid increasing violence and attacks attributed to the Bishnoi gang, particularly targeting Indian diaspora communities in Canada. Gary Anandasangaree, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, stated, “The Bishnoi gang has targeted various communities, instilling fear and violence. Listing this criminal group as a terrorist organization gives us stronger tools to counter their activities and protect our citizens.”

Canada’s Actions and the Impact
By designating the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, Canada has officially recognized it under the country’s Criminal Code as a terrorist group.

This designation allows Canadian authorities to seize or freeze any assets such as money, vehicles, or property belonging to the group within the country. Additionally, it grants law enforcement more robust means to tackle terrorist-related offenses, including those related to funding, travel, and recruitment.

“Canada will not tolerate terrorism and violence, especially when such acts are aimed at specific communities, creating an environment of fear,” Anandasangaree emphasized. “This terrorist listing will empower our security, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on the Bishnoi gang’s activities.”

The Bishnoi Gang’s Criminal Activities
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has been linked to multiple high-profile murders and violent incidents in India. Among its notorious acts are the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022, the murder of Rajput leader Sukhdev Gogamedi in December 2023, and the assassination of Maharashtra politician Baba Siddique in October 2024. Most recently, the gang was involved in a shooting outside Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in April 2025, due to the long-standing feud over the 1999 blackbuck poaching case.

The Growing Influence of Bishnoi Gang in Canada
The Bishnoi gang’s influence is becoming more pronounced in Canada, particularly in regions with large Indian diaspora populations. The gang’s violent activities, including murders, shootings, and arson, have been sowing fear and insecurity within these communities. In addition, the gang generates significant revenue through extortion and threats, further contributing to a climate of terror.

By officially listing the Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, the Canadian government aims to prioritize the safety of its citizens and combat the gang’s dangerous activities. This designation will expedite legal actions against the group and serve as a significant security measure for Canadian residents, especially within the Indian community.
