Renowned Assamese musician and singer Zubeen Garg has passed away in a scuba diving accident in Singapore. He was in Singapore as a cultural ambassador of Assam and to participate in the North East India Festival.
According to media reports, Zubeen Garg faced respiratory issues while scuba diving, after which members of the Assam Association Singapore rushed him to the hospital. He was admitted to the ICU, where he later passed away.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his grief over the tragic incident, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “Today Assam has lost one of its beloved sons. Words cannot express what Zubeen Garg meant to Assam. He left us too soon; it was not the time for him to go.”
He continued, “Zubeen’s voice had the power to energize people. His music spoke directly to our souls and minds. He was the epitome of Assam’s culture, and his contribution will inspire future generations.”
MP Ripun Bora also expressed his sorrow, writing, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely death of our cultural icon Zubeen Garg. His voice, music, and indomitable spirit inspired generations both within Assam and beyond.”
Assam Minister Ashok Singhal also expressed his condolences, stating, “Assam has lost not just a voice, but its heart. Zubeen Da was not just a singer; he was a pride of Assam and the country, whose songs brought our culture, emotions, and soul to every corner of the world.”
Zubeen Garg’s passing is an irreparable loss for Assam and the entire music industry. His music and voice not only made Assam’s identity known in India but also internationally, and his legacy will live on forever.
