England created history at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by defeating Australia by four wickets in the fourth Test of the Ashes 2025, completing the match within just two days. With this victory, England ended a nearly 15-year wait for a Test win on Australian soil, making the Boxing Day Test a memorable milestone for the visitors.

After bowling Australia out for 132 in their second innings, England has a target of 175 runs. The tourists approached the chase with aggressive intent and reached the target with four wickets still in hand. Vice-captain Harry Brook struck the winning runs, triggering loud celebrations among the travelling England supporters, famously known as the Barmy Army.

Young batter Jacob Bethell emerged as the top scorer in the run chase, contributing a confident 40 runs. His performance justified England’s selection call, as he was preferred over Ollie Pope for this crucial Test.

Earlier in the day, England’s bowlers continued their dominance as Australia once again struggled with the bat. Travis Head offered some resistance with a knock of 46, but regular wickets prevented the hosts from building momentum. Brydon Carse was the standout performer, finishing with impressive figures of 4 for 34 to dismantle the Australian lineup.

The pitch at the MCG played a major role throughout the match, heavily favouring fast bowlers. A total of 20 wickets fell on the opening day, and the same pattern continued on day two. With noticeable grass cover, the surface offered sharp movement, drawing criticism from some former players who felt it was overly challenging for batters.

England’s chase began at a brisk pace, with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett adopting an attacking approach under the team’s ‘Bazball’ philosophy. While Duckett was dismissed for 34, England briefly experimented by promoting fast bowler Brydon Carse to number three, a move that did not pay off.

Despite a few setbacks, England remained composed under pressure and sealed the victory under the leadership of captain Ben Stokes. Although Australia had already secured the Ashes series by winning the Tests in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide, this defeat at Melbourne denied them a clean sweep and provided England with a significant morale boost.
