Apple Launches iPhone 17e and MacBook Neo to Target Budget Buyers

Apple has unveiled several new products this week, including the budget-friendly iPhone 17e, a new entry-level laptop called MacBook Neo, and an updated iPad Air. Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook had hinted that the company was preparing for a “big week” of announcements. The newly introduced devices were showcased during media events held in New York, London, and Shanghai. Apple’s latest quarterly earnings also reached a record level, largely driven by strong demand for the iPhone 17 series.

To strengthen its position in the affordable smartphone segment, Apple introduced the iPhone 17e. The device is powered by the same A19 chip used in the base iPhone 17 model. It comes with 256GB of storage, which is double the capacity offered in the previous generation. The phone also features a 48-megapixel camera system and the new C1X modem, designed to deliver faster and more reliable cellular connectivity. While the display is slightly smaller and offers a lower refresh rate compared to the standard iPhone 17, it still includes Apple’s Super Retina display and Ceramic Shield 2 protection. The device also supports MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging for convenient wireless charging. The iPhone 17e starts at $599, which is about $200 less than the base iPhone 17, and will be available in black, white, and light pink.

Apple has also refreshed its mid-range tablet lineup with the updated iPad Air. The device is powered by the M4 chip, while the higher-end iPad Pro continues to feature the newer M5 chip. Even so, the M4 processor is considered powerful enough to handle everyday tasks such as video streaming, web browsing, and video editing. Apple has increased the iPad Air’s memory from 8GB to 12GB without raising the price. The 11-inch iPad Air starts at $599, while the larger 13-inch model starts at $799.

In addition, Apple upgraded its premium MacBook Pro lineup with the introduction of M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, which promise improved performance and better power efficiency. The 14-inch MacBook Pro comes with 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage and is priced at $2,199, representing a $200 increase compared to the previous model. Meanwhile, the 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,699. These models now support newer connectivity technologies such as Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, although the display and front camera remain unchanged.

Apple also entered the budget laptop market for the first time with the launch of the MacBook Neo. The 13-inch laptop runs on the A18 Pro chip, which previously appeared in the iPhone 16 Pro. It offers 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and two USB-C ports. The higher-end 512GB version additionally includes Touch ID support. Pricing starts at $599 for the 256GB model, while the 512GB variant costs $699. Apple is also offering a $100 discount for students and educators who preorder the device.

The company has also updated the MacBook Air lineup. The new version features the base M5 chip and increases the starting storage to 512GB. It continues to offer 16GB of RAM along with improved networking capabilities. The 13-inch MacBook Air starts at $1,099, while the 15-inch model starts at $1,299.

Overall, Apple’s latest announcements reflect a strategy to cover both budget and premium segments. With the introduction of devices like the iPhone 17e and MacBook Neo, the company appears to be making a stronger push into the affordable technology market while continuing to upgrade its high-end product lineup.
