India has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad confirmed as the host city for the prestigious Centenary Edition. The announcement came during the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, where representatives from 74 member nations and territories voted in favour of India’s bid.
This marks India’s return as a multi-sport mega-event host for the first time since the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.
A Modern Ahmedabad Showcased as India’s Sporting Hub
India’s proposal highlighted Ahmedabad as a rapidly developing, modern metropolis with deep cultural roots, an ideal setting for a milestone edition of the Games. The bid emphasised India’s youthful energy, expanding sports ecosystem, and its growing capacity to stage global events at scale.
Right after the announcement, the Assembly Hall lit up with a vibrant performance featuring Garba dancers from Gujarat and Indian dhol drummers, giving delegates a colourful preview of the cultural experience athletes and fans can expect in 2030.
A New Era for the Commonwealth Games, Says CS President
Commonwealth Sport President Dr Donald Rukare described the decision as the beginning of a “new golden era” for the Games.
He said, “After Glasgow 2026, we now move toward a landmark Centenary Edition in Ahmedabad 2030. India brings scale, ambition, cultural richness and tremendous sporting passion.”

2030 Edition to Feature 15–17 Sports
The Centenary Games are set to include 15–17 disciplines, with the final programme being shaped in collaboration with Commonwealth Sport and international sports federations. Work on finalising the schedule will begin next month, and the complete line-up will be unveiled next year.
Sports under consideration include:
Archery, Badminton, 3×3 Basketball & 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball, Beach Volleyball, T20 Cricket, Cycling, Diving, Hockey, Judo, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon & Para Triathlon, and Wrestling.
The host nation may also propose up to two additional traditional sports.
India Expresses Gratitude
Commonwealth Games Association of India President Dr P.T. Usha welcomed the decision, saying:
“We are honoured by the trust placed in us. The 2030 Games will celebrate a century of the Commonwealth movement while also laying the foundation for the next hundred years.”
India’s Build-Up to 2030 and the Road to the 2036 Olympics
India has been steadily strengthening its sports infrastructure in recent years. The country has successfully hosted major international events, including the Para Athletics Championships and its first World Athletics Intercontinental Tour.
Under the current government, India has been pushing to attract global tournaments with the larger goal of bidding for the 2036 Summer Olympics, making 2030 an important milestone in that long-term strategy.
