The indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations has entered its 20th day, with the health of several protesters becoming a growing concern. Social activist Sonam Wangchuk and three members of the All-India Students’ Association (AISA) are reportedly experiencing worsening health conditions as the protest continues.
According to the medical team monitoring the protesters, Wangchuk is showing signs of mild dehydration and has lost around 350 grams of body weight since the fast began. Doctors stated that he remains mentally alert despite the physical strain. His latest medical examination recorded a blood pressure of 108/68 mmHg, a blood sugar level of 80 mg/dL, and a pulse rate of 72 beats per minute.
The condition of three AISA student activists participating in the parallel hunger strike has also become increasingly serious. Medical professionals have advised one of the students, who is suffering from severe hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar), to immediately discontinue the fast and seek hospital treatment to prevent further complications.
Former AISA president Sai Balaji said doctors have instructed all three student protesters to avoid walking due to their weakened physical condition. They have now been advised to use wheelchairs for the remainder of their hunger strike.
Meanwhile, the protesters maintain that the Central Government has not responded to their key demands despite the prolonged agitation. Among their primary demands are the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, greater transparency in the examination system, and an impartial investigation into the alleged irregularities in competitive exams.
In a related development, the Delhi High Court is scheduled to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on July 20 concerning allegations of continuous and intrusive police surveillance at the protest site. The petition raises concerns over the privacy and democratic rights of those participating in the demonstration.
Medical teams continue to closely monitor the condition of all hunger strikers. Health experts have cautioned that prolonged fasting significantly increases the risk of serious medical complications, making regular medical assessments essential throughout the ongoing protest.
